The Ongi Kuden is a Forgery
"It is supposed to be a lecture based on the Chu Hokkekyo (annotated Lotus Sutra), Nichiren's personal copy of the Lotus Sutra in which he had inscribed relevant passages from commentaries like those of T'ien Tai, Chih-I and from other sources. BUT….when you compare the two it becomes obvious that the two texts are unrelated. Only 23 passages from the Ongi Kuden appear in the 123 passages of the Chu Hokkekyo. The second colophon's reference to the serpent that appeared at Nichiren's lecture on the Devadatta chapter has all the earmarks of a later legendary accretion. Finally, the date on Nikko's seal indicates a forgery. There was no first day of the first month in the first year of Koan. The era name was changed from kenji to koan on the 29th day of the 2nd month…. In one place, the Ongi Kuden quotes a work referred to as the K'o-Chu. This is a Yuan Dynasty commentary on the Lotus Sutra by Hsu Hsing-shan dated, Yuan-chen 1 (1295). (thirteen years after Nichiren's death). Also, no mention of the Ongi Kuden occurs before Nitcho's Keiun Sho in 1503. Of course there is no ORIGINAL manuscript or other corroborating evidence, how could there be? These facts are proof that the Ongi Kuden is a forgery."(Rev. Yasahara)
