Have you examined the costs of a funeral here in the US lately, especially with clergy involved?
The apartment priest mentioned in the article was asking about $5000 US for his services. Not at all out of line for what happens here either - so I'm not sure where the outrage should be placed.
BTW, this article is from 2004, and does not mention denominations. It also does mention mostly priests NOT associated with temples. Are you inferring anything in particular from these points? Just curious..........

The funeral home where my mother was cremated wanted $1,200 for a vase to put her ashes in. I got a little brass box for them at the Cost Plus Imports Store for $60. It's really shocking the kind of pressure they put on grieving families. It's a major, major racket.
Pre-arrangements are the key, no matter where you live.

If you are a member of a church, they usually charge nothing for a funeral service, i think. Maybe they expect a donation. And these days you can save a lot if you are careful. In California, you can now be buried without being embalmed. You can also buy biodegradeable caskets.

The funeral parlor he had was in no way performing a "racket" and my whole family was satisfied. An interesting article, Don.
